AGP(P) accuses govt of protecting Bangladeshi infiltrators
Guwahati, July 24 (UNI) The Asom Gana Parishad(Progressive)(AGP-P) today accused the Congress-led state government of sheltering ''suspected-Bangladeshi nationals'' at the cost of the welfare of indigenous people here.
Addressing a press meet here, AGP (P) general secretary Rupam Kakoty said, ''The government is protecting illegal Bangladeshi settlers and the welfare of the people is being compromised.'' He said the government should issue land rights to the indigenous population rather than engaging itself in protecting the infiltrators.
Alleging that the government's endorsement of infiltrators was helping fundamentalists and Jehadi elements expand their base in the state, Mr Kakoty said the ISI agents were moving freely and even escaping from police custody due to the 'leniency' of the government.
Accusing Asom of failing to do check suspected Bangladeshi nationals from entering, the AGP(P) leader said it threatened the 'sovereignty' of the state.
''The state government is not giving due seriousness to the issue for the sake of petty vote bank politics,'' he added.
He demanded that the infiltration problem be declared a national problem, adding that the demands of the historic ''Asom Agitation'' were becoming far more relevant with the passage of time.
