Retd ACP survives suicide attempt but daughter killed
New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) Having accidentally killed his daughter in the first suicide attempt, a retired Delhi Police officer, however, managed to shoot himself in the second attempt at his Pitampura residence in North-West Delhi today.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jai Bhagwan Mallik (62) is struggling for life at a hospital here with multiple pellets fired from his licenced double-barrelled gun embedded in his head, said a senior police official.
Rajni (31), who unsuccessfully tried to foil the suicide attempt by her father, died when Mallik fired the first shot. She died on the spot when splinters of the first cartridge hit her on the chest.
Living away from her husband, she is survived by a six-year-old son.
Undeterred by the killing of his daughter, the police official fired a second shot causing himself multiple injuries. Admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Saroj Hospital near his home, Mallik is in a critical condition. Incidentally, both his sons are working in the same hospital as doctors.
Mallik in his suicide note said he was taking the extreme step as he was suffering from multiple ailments and also was keeping tense because his married daughter was staying with him due to estrangement with her husband.
Mallik, who retired in 2005, was suffering from TB, kidney malfunction, and blood pressure.
