Mysore, July 23 (UNI) The activists of the Chamalapura Thermal Plant Virodhi Raita Horata Samithi, opposing the proposed 1,000 mw power plant in Chamalapura here, conducted a 'rasta-roko' agitation and threatened to intensify it if the State Government fails to shun the project.

Former Minister and senior Congress leader M Shivanna alleged the State Government had ignored the adverse aspects of the project to the environment while sanctioning it.

He said people who were on peaceful agitation for the past two months would resort to violent protests if the State Government remained adamant in going ahead with the project. Thousands of farmers in many villages would be displaced and would become refugees in their own land, he said.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded due to the road blockade in the busy H D Kote-Mysore road.

The proposed Rs 5,500 crore Chamalapura Thermal Project required over 3,000 acres of land.
