Power generation begins at Omkareshwar project
Omkareshwar, MP, July 23 (UNI) With a 65 MW unit becoming operational, the Omkareshwar hydropower project on Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh has begun informal power production.
A government spokesperson claimed that the 520 MW project, which has eight 65 MW units, would be completed in record time.
Speaking on the occasion, Energy Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya told reporters here that only one turbine could function at the dam height of 189 metre. At present, the Supreme Court has permitted storing water upto this level only.
In order to test these machines, all the eight machines would be run separately at this water level. After obtaining permission for 193.6 metre water level, all the units would start operating.
Assuring complete rehabilitation of dam affected, Mr Vijaywargiya said the state government was concerned over the matter and compensation had been provided to 90 per cent of the dam affected.
Compensation would be distributed to the rest of the dam affected.
Pointing out that electricity was essential for the development of the state, he said the government was making fast progress in this direction.
Narmada valley Development Authority Vice-Chairman Uday Verma said full attention would be paid towards conservation of bio-diversity while constructing of the dam.
