Bengal govt calls global tender for ring road around Kolkata

Kolkata, Jul 23 (UNI) The West Bengal Government has called a global tender for construction of a 50-km elevated ring road around the city to ease out traffic congestion, Transport Minister Subhash Chakraborty told the state Assembly today.

Replying to an additional question, Mr.Chakraborty said the proposed ring road, to be run on the basis of build-operate and transfer (BOT), would start from NSCBI airport and wind around the city with staircases at different important points.

The detailed project report(DPR) would be prepared after the contract is awarded to a company after July 31, the last date for bidding, he said.

Mr.Chakraborty informed the House that the Government also had plans to construct an 'East-West Corridor' from Howrah to Salt Lake and a flyover from Sodepur on the city's northern outskirts to Joka in the south as part of its overall programme to improve movement of vehicular traffic. However, both the projects were in the preliminary stage, he said.
