Thiruvananthapuram, July 23 (UNI) Asserting that any attempt to divide people on the lines of religion and caste will not succeed in Kerala, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said those who spoke about a second liberation struggle were trying to pull the State backwards.

''They will be playing with fire if they encourage such activities,'' he said, while inaugurating the 'Students' Assembly 1957', a retrospective of the first Kerala Legislature at the old Assembly hall here.

Mr Achuthanandan said it was good that Defence Minister A K Antony had now realised that the first liberation struggle that brought down the democratically elected EMS Namboodiripad Government was 'anti-people.' ''Those Congress leaders who speak about the second liberation struggle now should take Mr Antony's words into consideration,'' he added.

Referring to the standoff between the Government and the Church on the issue of minority rights in admission and other procedures in educational institutions, the Chief Minister said the Government was willing to hold talks with the Church to settle the issue.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Vijayakumar, who presided over the inaugural function, said the mock assembly would enable the students to learn the history of the State's Legislature and also the Assembly proceedings.

After the inaugural function, Anuroop P S of the Government Law College assumed the Speaker's Chair and the proceedings started with the 'Governor's' address.
