Ten jute marketing yards to be opened soon

Kishanganj, Jul 22: Of the 10 marketing yards to be constructed by Jute Corporation of India (JCI) across the country, two have been earmarked for Bihar, one of them at Kishanganj.

District Magistrate (DM) M Saravanan told mediapersons here today that state agriculture department principal secretary N S Madhavan in a high-level meeting with JCI on Friday last decided to construct such marketing yards.

Under 'Jute mission', a brain-child of the JCI, the other yard in the state might be opened at Araria or Katihar, Mr Saravanan said.

With Rs one crore of investment at each marketing yard, there would be six yards in West Bengal and one each in Assam and Andhra Pradesh, the DM added0.

Under the mission, facilities for the processing and allied things would be made available to the jute-growers under one umbrella.

Such a scheme would not only promote better and finer quality of jute and its products but also attract the jute-growers, who are gradually getting disillusioned with the traditional farming across the country.

The DM said about three acres of land would be made available for each project.
