Gangtok, Jul 22: The National Planning Commission has urged Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling to take quick action for expediting the 26 mega hydro power projects proposed to be implemented in various areas of the state.

''Out of 26 medium and large hydro projects, with a total potential of 5188 MW, identified under this initiative, DPR for only 19 projects (total capacity 835 MW) have been prepared. We hope you would take quick action for expediting these projects,'' Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia stated in a letter to the chief minister Pawan Chamling.

The Commission also urged the state government to complete the three MW Lachung Phase-II and Mangley (two MW) projects which were targeted to be commissioned in the tenth Plan during the year 2007-08.

Similarly, the progress of Relli Khola (12 MW) and Rongli Khola (five MW) projects initiated during the tenth Plan was very slow.

''These projects should also be expedited and we feel that they should be targeted for completion by 2009-10,'' Mr Ahluwalia said.

The deputy chairman also congratulated Sikkim on being adjudged by the Ministry of Panchayat Raj as the third best State in implementation of the Panchayati Raj.

He assured that the Commission would do its best to remove the constraint of funds which was hindering the airport project at Pakyong in East Sikkim.

The state government was also urged to address the poor school infrastructure in the state and the school drop out rate (Class I to V) which was higher than the national average.

''The state government should also expedite completion of minor irrigation schemes with assistance availed under AIBP,'' Mr Ahluwalia added.
