Patna, Jul 22 (UNI) The overall flood situation in Bihar continued to be grim for the fourth day today following incessant rains in the state's northern districts.

Heavy downpour in the catchment areas of major rivers of northern Bihar, originating from Nepal, had threatened breach of embankment at many places.

Sources at the special flood monitoring cell set up at the state headquarter said here today that Punpun river had been flowing above the danger mark due to incessant rains for the past four days, while water level of other rivers were rising, exerting pressures on the embankments.

As a precautionary measure, a vigil on all embankments had been increased.

In order to prevent breach in embankments as well as flash floods in several new areas, authorities in Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Madhubani and Darbhanga districts were taking adequate steps to further strengthen them.

Meanwhile, the sources said the government was making all efforts to provide succour to about 25,000 marooned people in about 12 villages in Sitamarhi district in North Bihar where several low lying areas had already been inundated following release of water from the lower regions of Nepal.

The water level in the major rain-fed rivers, including Bagmati, Koshi, Gandak and Kamalabalan, was increasing but have not yet crossed the red mark UNI KKS-RS AA BDP RS1727
