7O per cent of security breaches due to software defects
Mumbai, July 22 (UNI) Chief Espionage Officer of Mumbai Police, Vijay Mukhi has said seventy per cent of all security breaches were due to software defects, arising from technical and logical flaws.
''Security breach impacts business very severely'', Mr Mukhi said while addressing a seminar on 'Security development lifecycle', organised by the Indian Merchants Chamber here on friday.
Dwelling at length on developing secure software. he said Microsoft had laid down a multistage process, which includes project inception to provide for security to business products covered by SSL, e-mail and database services, product risk assessment and analysis, creating security documents, tools and best practices for customers, secure coding and testing practices (such as Fuzz testing, Pen testing), security response planning and execution.
Mukhi pinpointed that network security to some extent can be ensured by installing firewalls and intrusion detection devices.
MIEL e-security Chairman and M D M N Kutty Nair opined that anybody who logs on to a system is vulnerable to contamination. All internet security systems rested on three legs, people, process, and technology.
''Enterprises in India are waking up to the need to face the security challenges, resulting in a high growth prospects for internet security (IS) market, which is right now at an infant stage'', Kutty said.
Infrasoft Technologies MD Hanuman Tripathi focussed on the need for security measures in internet banking, ATMs and conventional banking systems. Internet banking security spanned areas of network security, transaction security and protection against frauds, reporting fraudulent websites and e-mails, he added.
