ULFA rebel killed, arms recovered in Asom

Guwahati, July 21 (UNI) A top ULFA rebel was killed while a huge cache of arms recovered in two separate encounters by the Army in Asom today.

An ULFA camp was busted during a pre-dawn swoop by troops of the 66 Field Regiment in Upper Asom's Sivasagar district.

According to reports, the three-hour encounter took place in the Mathurapur area of Abhayapur reserve forest Charaideu subdivision in the district at around 0500 hrs.

Unconfirmed reports said two Army personnel were seriously injured in the encounter and both were airlifted to the Army Hospital at Dinjan in Dibrugarh.

One universal machine gun (UMG), three 303 rifles, one carbine, one pistol, three grenade launchers and other assorted ammunition were recovered from the camp.

The rebels, however, managed to escape.

In another incident, a top ULFA rebel was gunned down by troops of the 6 Rajput Regiment at Rampara near Boko in Lower Asom's Chhayygaon constituency at around 1500 hrs today.

While the rebel was yet to be identified, the Army said he could be a top leader of the outfit's '109 Battalion'.

An AK 47 rifle, two grenades, three magazines, explosives and other incriminating documents were seized from his possession.
