India shines at Physics Olympiad

Mumbai, July 21 (UNI) A 5-member team from India came sixth in the 38th International Olympiad (IPhO 2007), being held at Isfahan in Iran from July 13-22.

Rohit Singh (Dehradun) and Raman Sharma (Jaipur) won a gold medal each, while Harsh Harivansh Pareek (Mumbai) and Pratyush Pandey (Jaipur) won silver medals. Vivek Lohani (Almora) won an honourable mention.

Seventy teams from all over the world are participating in the Olympiad, a release said.

The team was accompanied by two team leaders -- Prof Vijay Singh, National Co-ordinator, Science Olympiads of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), and Prof Charudutt Kadolkar, IIT, Guwahati.

The team was selected via a three-tier process. The first stage consisted of an all-India examination on Physics for over 42,000 students. The next two tiers consisted of theoretical and practical tests.

HBCSE is the nodal centre for all Science Olympiads, and is supported by the Dept of Atomic Energy (DAE), Dept of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Human Resources (MHRD).

The victorious team will arrive at Mumbai on July 23, the release added.
