Honorary doctorates for Bhutan CJ, Prof Sarathy

Hyderabad, July 21 (UNI) Bhutan Chief Justice Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye and eminent Jurist Prof Vepa P Sarathy were today conferred Honorary Doctorates in Law by NALSAR University of Law by the Chancellor Justice J S Singhvi for their outstanding contributions to law and jurisprudence.

Elevated as Bhutan Chief Justice in 1991, Justice Tobgye had worked with the judiciary for the development and improvement of the system, inter alia, institutional, professional, structural design and reforming process.

He had submitted the first draft of the Bhutan Constitution to the King, which was all set to be adopted after the Parliamentary Election next year, the Citation presented to Justice Tobgye by Vice-Chancellor Ranghbir Singh said.

A visiting professor at NALSAR, 90-year-old Sarathy had been the Legal Assistant to the then Press Commission Chairman Justice Goswamy (1977-78), member of the Law Commission of India under Justice Mathew and represented the Union of India as representative of the Attorney General of India in the Bhopal Gas Leak Case. He started practising law in 1942, after taking a degree from the Madras University.
