Flood situation in Bihar remains grim following incessent rain

Patna, Jul 21 (UNI) The overall flood situation in Bihar continued to be critical for the third day today following incessent rains in several north and south districts threatening breaching the embankments at several places.

Official sources here said though all the rain-fed rivers except the Punpun, were flowing just below the danger level but heavy rains during the past 72 hours had put tremendous pressure on almost all the embankments in several districts.

Among the major rain-fed rivers, yet to cross the red mark but might cause trouble in case of further rain, were the Bagmati, Koshi, Gandak, Kamalabalan, Burhigandak and the Abdhara, the sources said.

However, in order to prevent breaching in embankments as well as the flash floods in several new areas, authorities in Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Madhubani and Darbhanga districts were taking adequate steps to further strenthen them.

Meanwhile, the sources said the government was making all efforts to reach succour to about 25,000 marooned people in about 12 villages in Sitamarhi district in North Bihar, where several low lying areas had already been inundated following release of water from the lower regions of Nepal.

However, there had been no report of loss of any life from anywhere due to the floods so far, though property worth crores of rupees had already been damaged.
