'Bring Indo-US nuke deal under Par approval'

New Delhi, July 21: Senior BJP leader Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, CPI National Secretary D Raja and former Chief Justice of Supreme Court J S Verma have demanded legislation to subject all bilateral and multilateral treaties, including the Indo-US nuclear deal, to ratification.

''Constitution amendment should be avoided for the same as process to amend it involves cumbersome procedures,'' they said in a seminar organised by industry chamber Assocham yesterday.

The UPA government kept Parliament and people totally in dark as to what is happening on Indo-US nuclear treaty, compromising India's sovereignity and jointly blamed two bureaucrats negotiating the nuclear deal in Washington with their counterparts, they added.

Dr Joshi said that if nuclear deal is struck under the framework of existing bilateral understanding, India would be forced to cease its territorial sovereignity and completely surrender its space achievements to the US with totally delinking energy security from the deal.

He called for formation of a forum in which the elected representatives of people and intelligensia of country should be roped in to oppose the nuclear deal with the US and force the government to review it in a manner that can adequately safeguard India's legitimate interests.

Mr Raja indicated that his party was opposed to Indo-US nuclear deal and favours that all treaties and agreements whether bilateral or multilateral should be subjected to a fresh parliamentary legislation for their wider acceptance.
