Varanasi, July 21 (UNI) Hours after going on an indefinite strike to demand second counselling for admission to five vacant seats of MD/MS, resident doctors at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) hospital here this evening suspended the stir till Wednesday following assurances by administration.

''We have resumed work with immediate effect following assurance by Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) director Gajendra Singh to conduct second round of counselling for internal candidates towards admission to five vacant seats of MD/MS course by Wednesday,'' BHU Resident Doctors Association vice-president Avinash Singh said here.

''We have not called off the strike, but only suspended it till Wednesday. If IMS director failed to keep his promise by Wednesday we will again go on indefinite strike,'' Dr Singh added.

Earlier in the day, about 250 resident doctors struck work indefinitely, paralysing operations at the Sir Sunder Lal Hospital BHU -- most premier public hospital for patients of East UP, Bihar and Nepal.

Operations at the Outdoor Patient Department were paralysed completely, but emergency services and ICU continued to function normally.

Later in the day, after the crucial IMS PG Board meeting the institute director Prof Singh assured the striking doctors of conducting a second counselling for internal candidates towards admission to five vacant MD/MS seats by Wednesday next.

Out of the total 82 seats of MD/MS, 41 seats are directly filled up by Director General Health Services, New Delhi, while 28 seats are filled with candidates who have passed MBBS from BHU only.

Admission to remaining 13 seats was done through an All India PG Medical Entrance conducted by IMS-BHU in May last.

Despite completion of the entire MD/MS admission process, five seats were vacant. Internal candidates were demanding a second counselling for filling the vacant seats as two rounds of counselling have already been completed for external candidates.

The five vacant MD/MS seats include one each for specialisation in General Surgery, General Medicine, Dermatology, Pharmacology and Anaesthesiology.
