AITWA becomes member of International Road Transport Union
New Delhi, Jul 21 (UNI) The All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA), a leading body of transporters in the country, has become the first professional body of the country to become an Associate Member of the Geneva-based International Road Transport Union (IRU), the nodal agency for transporters at the international level.
Announcing this at a press conference here today, AITWA President Ramesh Agarwal said it was a rare honour for a transport body in India by the IRU, which is recognised by the UN as a representative of the road transport industry worldwide.
Founded in 1948 in Geneva, IRU has a global reach through its 180 members in 70 countries. It maintains close working relations with competent national, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations.
It also helps the transport industry in formulating national and international legislation and works for harmonisation and simplification of procedures affecting road transport.
Mr Agarwal said AITWA and IRU had come together to foster synergy and take advantage of a number of important trends in the road transport sector.
''At present, AITWA has been included in the IRU as an Associate Member. We hope to become its full-fledged member soon,'' he added.
