TN to set up Urogynaecology dept in Govt medical colleges
Chennai, July 20 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government would establish Urogynaecology Department in all Government medical colleges in the State, in addition to the existence of a separate department for Urogynaecology at the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital here, according to State Health Minister, K K S S R Ramachandran.
Inaugurating the Fifth International Conference and Live Workshop on 'Urogynaecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery' here today, Mr Ramachandran said very few women approached doctors for treatment of urogynaecological problems in India.
''Unlike foreign countries, where women approach doctors easily, Indian women are shy and hesitate to tell even their family members about their condition,'' he added.
In his address, State Health Secretary V K Subburaj pointed out that 18-crore women were affected with urogynaecological problems like urinary incontinence, prolapse of the uterus and other pelvic organs.
Mr Subburaj said the number of Specialists and Institutions were dwindling. The need of the hour was to empower our medical officers, gynaecologists and those who have completed MBBS, he added.
He said the Government had also started short-term courses in this speciality to train 60 persons every year at the hospital.
