Heavy inflows in Mettur dam, warning issued to 11 TN dists

Mettur, Tamil Nadu, July 19 (UNI) Mettur Sub-Divisional Officer K Loganathan today issued a flood warning to 11 Districts Collectors in the state in the wake of heavy inflows into Mettur dam from Karnataka reservoirs.

A PWD official told UNI that the dam would attain its full capacity of 120 feet tomorrow morning, the 39th time in the history of the Stanley reservoir.

With inflows of 1,17,782 cusecs, the level at noon in the dam stood at 114.21 feet. The discharge was maintained at 20,000 cusecs, the official said adding 1,29,000 cusecs of water was released from the Krishnaraja Sagar dam.

In anticipation of more water from Karnataka reservoirs, flood warning was issued to 11 districts, which included Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tiruchirapalli, Tanjavur and Cuddalore, the official said.

People residing on the banks of river Cauvery were asked to move to safer places.
