Border row: BJP seeks dismissal of Asom Government

Guwahati, July 19 (UNI) Alleging failure of the Asom Government to resolve the vexed boundary dispute with its neighbouring states, the BJP today demanded dismissal of the Congress-led Asom government.

Addressing a press conference here, Asom BJP legislator party leader Mission Ranjan Das said the Congress-led state government has turned a 'blind eye' to the boundary problem, leading to insecurity among the inhabitants of the border lying areas.

''As if the boundary disputes were not enough, now the neighbouring states were pushing Bangladeshis to Asom. But the state government has remained a mute spectator,'' Mr Das said.

The BJP alleged that the reticence of the government stemed from the fact that the Congress can't risk its vote bank - the illegal migrants.

''Fear of losing its block votes has made the Congress government refrain from taking any effective steps to curb the infiltration, ingress of Bangladeshis from the neighbouring states and resolving the border imbroglio,'' Mr Das said.

Referring to a statement of state revenue minister Bhumidhar Barman in the Assembly, the BJP leader mentioned that the state government has admitted that Nagaland has encroached 1,62,471 acres, Meghalaya 11,651 acres, Arunachal Pradesh 25,331 acres and Mizoram 12,471 acres land of the state.

''However, till date the state government has failed to initiate any measures to retrieve the lost tracts. It's really unfortunate,'' the BJP leader said.

He said on the receiving end were the people living in the border areas, where killings, extortion and threats have become a regular feature.

The BJP has also submitted a memorandum to the President of India demanding immediate dismissal of the government.

In the memorandum, the BJP noted that 'even though a number of commissions have been formed to settle the disputes arising out of demarcation of borders, yet none of these have been able to show any concrete results because of bureaucratic lethargy coupled with non-existent governmental logistical support and sincere political and administrative will'.
