Agartala, July 18 (UNI) Public Works Department(PWD) and Border Roads Organisation(BTO) have initiated a concentrated move to give a face lift to NH 44, which connects Tripura to the rest of the country through Assam.

Official sources here today said that the main task under the project was to convert the existing road, which cut through several hills and forest land to plains and extend the length and breadth of the highway.

The PWD and BRO officials have started joint inspection yesterday on the stretch of 40 kms of NH 44(A) connecting eastern parts of the state up to Mizoram capital Aizawl, which would propose to be worked as an alternative road for both Tripura and Mizoram.

According to the project, the existing 210-km highway stretch in Tripura would be extended up to 400 kms with the construction of 140 kms single lane expansions of NH 44.

Meanwhile, Highway Authority of India had sanctioned the project for converting the Tripura section of the road to double-lane from single lane. The BRO had sent a detailed project for converting NH 44 into four lanes.

To improve the road connectivity centre had launched a Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in Northeastern region and under this project 34 district headquarters of NE states to be connected by at least double lane roads initially.
