The Gauhati High Court, by its judgement dated January 19, 2007, had stayed the delimitation exercise till fresh census in three hill districts of Manipur was completed.

The Supreme Court granted interim stay of the impugned order of the Gauhati High Court while issuing notice in a Special Leave Petition filed by the government which came up for hearing on July 13.
