CPI(M) condemns Sheikh Hasina's arrest
Kolkata, July 17 (UNI) Condemning the arrest of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, the CPI(M) West Bengal State Committee today urged the Centre to perform its ''necessary role''.
Extending full support to the pro-democracy struggle of the Left and democratic forces in Bangladesh, the party said in a statement that the way the Awami League leader was arrested made it clear that the caretaker Government in Bangladesh was out to 'suppress' political activities and democratic rights.
''We are anxious at the arrest of Sheikh Hasina and strongly condemn it. It has become necessary for the Indian Government to immediately play the ''necessary role'' instead of keeping silent,'' the statement said.
The party observed that the recent happenings in Bangladesh appeared 'ominous' in the background of the 'assault on democracy' by the military junta in the past.
The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh was grilled yesterday on charges of taking bribe and it was proved that the army-led coalition government would not maintain the democratic rules in that country.
''The coalition government's duty is to conduct free and fair election in Bangladesh. The parliament election had not been held for long in the name of making the country corruption free and politically renovated,'' the statement added.
