Cong snubs CPI(M) on land for poor issue
Hyderabad, July 18 (UNI) The ruling Congress today drew a parallel between Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal regarding implementation of housing scheme in the state Assembly to corner CPI(M), which is spearheading a struggle for land to the poor in the state.
Participating in a short duration discussion on government lands and related issues, government Chief Whip Kiran Kumar Reddy claimed that except for the centrally-sponsored Indira Awas Yojana(IAY), there was no housing programme in the CPI(M)-ruled state.
On the other hand, as many as 54 crore houses were constructed for the poor and 4.37 lakh acres of land distributed to the poor in Andhra Pradesh.
Only 1.82 lakh acres were distributed in West Bengal with average land holding size of 1/12th of an acre, Mr Reddy, who had visited West Bengal recently to know first hand implementation of welfare programmes in that state, contended, evoking strong protests from the CPI(M) members.
Reminding that it was because of the Left parties' support, the Congress was leading the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, CPI(M) Floor leader N Narasimaiah maintained that it was improper to refer the affairs of West Bengal when its Chief Minister or his cabinet colleagues were not here to defend.
Successfully implementing land reforms, the Left Front retained power for six successive terms, he said, asking the Congress member not to ''throw a stone sitting inside a glass house''.
