Child birth registration improves in Rajasthan

Jaipur, July 18 (UNI) Child birth registration in Rajasthan has improved to touch 78.01 per cent in 2006 against the corresponding figure of 61.43 per cent in the preceeding year.

Deputy Chief Registrar Births and Deaths B R Jat said awareness of registration of child births has also improved in rural areas and it reached 61.36 per cent last year as compared to corresponding figure of 42.29 per cent in 2005.

Speaking at a workshop organised by NGO--Plan India--Mr Jat said that the state government and various non governmental organisations and agencies were working for achieving 100 per cent registration of births and deaths as it was of vital importance for chalking out development plans and mandatory under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969.

Despite efforts being made by the government and NGOs, over 10 million children still go unregistered in the country.

Plan India has been working in 10 states of the country for achieving universal birth registration target. The NGO had also been working on the task in countries like Phillipines, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal and Bangladesh, an NGO spokesperson said.
