Bangalore, July 17 (UNI) Two people were feared washed away in swirling Kabini river in Mysore district, which is flowing above the danger mark following a discharge of one lakh cusecs of water today.

Mysore Deputy Commissioner Selva Kumar told UNI that efforts were being made to recover the bodies. ''Due to continuous heavy downpour in Wynad in Kerala, Kabini was getting huge inflows and the water reaching the Beechnahalli dam across the river was being released,'' he added.

The swollen Kabini inundated large areas in the temple town of Nanjangud and threatened the low-lying areas downstream in Narasipur and Kollegal taluks. More than 1.4 lakh cusecs of water was flowing in Cauvery river towards Tamil Nadu.

The South West Monsoon with renewed vigour is battering Karnataka as normal life went out of gear in the coastal and Western Ghat districts even as floods threatened villages and towns in the Cauvery basin.

Flood threats in Krishna river, however, receded today with decreased discharge from reservoirs in the catchment areas in Maharashtra. The discharge from Narayanpur dam had fallen to 49,000 cusecs today, officials said.
