Rs 1.3 Cr loss due to sea erosion in Dakshina Kannada Dist

Mangalore, July 17 (UNI) Following incessant rains in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district since yesterday, sea erosion had been reported in several parts, mainly in Udupi district incurring a total loss of over Rs 1.3 crore.

According to official sources, land was eroded at Polipu (250 mts), Padukere (120 mts), Kidiyur (425 mts), Kadekar (200 mts), Nadipatna (300 mts)- all in Udupi taluk and Shiroor (100 mts).

In Kundapura Taluk. Two houses had been partially damaged.

Several low lying areas in the undivided district had been submerged in the rain water. Hosmata Bridge on the State Highways between Uppinangady-Subramanya was twice submerged yesterday, disrupting the movement of traffic. Two houses were partially damaged in Bantwal Taluk in Dakshina Kannada, the sources added.

Artificial floods were also created due to heavy rain yesterday at several locations in the city, following rain water overflowing in the unclean culverts. For the first time, Puttur town also experienced flood situation due to heavy rain.

During last 24 hours ending at 0700 hrs today, Puttur in Dakshina Kannada received the highest rainfall of 16 cms, followed by Bantwal 15 cms, Belthangady 12 cms, Sullya 10 cms and Mangalore eight cms in Dakshina Kannada, while Udupi received five cms followed by Kundapura four cms and Karkala three cms - all in Udupi district.
