NHRC team to probe alleged rape of Muslim women in UP

New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will be soon sending a probe team to Dhanni Deeh village of Shravasti district in Uttar Pradesh, where a large number of Muslims were allegedly beaten up and several women of the community attacked and raped.

The Commission's decision comes after it took cognisance of a news report that appeared in a national daily on July 14. The news report stated that Muslims in the village were attacked by people belonging to Hindu community on July 10.

The attackers allegedly enjoying the patronage of a Cabinet minister of the UP Government, also reportedly gangraped several women and even paraded them naked, the report said.

It said while no FIR was registered in the incident.

Trouble started a few days back when a Muslim youth of the village eloped with a Hindu girl of a nearby village.

The Commission after going through the news report has sent a notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP, Uttar Pradesh, for a factual report within four weeks.
