MPs discuss draft policy on criminal justice

New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) The Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs today discussed in detail the draft National Policy on Criminal Justice.

Chaired by Home Minister Shivraj Patil, today's meeting was in continuation of the discussions held on the same subject on May 4 and July 10 this year.

The members welcomed the Government's attempt to draft the National Policy on Criminal Justice.

They made certain suggestions during their presentations.

These related to issues like admissibility of confessions made to police, control of communal violence, quick disposal of court cases, introduction of the concept of federal crimes, police reforms, victim-orientation to the criminal justice system, etc.

The members present at the meeting included Debabrata Biswas, Urkho Gwra Brahma, Lalhmingliana, Raj Mohinder Singh, Dr K Malaisamy, Mahmood A. Madani and Jai Prakash Agarwal of the Rajya Sabha and Mani Kumar Subba, Nikhil Kumar, Madan Lal Sharma, Manoranjan Bhakta, Raghuvir Singh Kaushal, S D Mandlik, Mohan Singh and Dhirendra Agrawal and B Susheela of the Lok Sabha.

Ministers of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal and Manikrao Gavit, Minister of State for Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs Suryakanta Patil and the Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta were among others present at the meeting.

The deliberations will continue in the next meeting of the Consultative Committee.
