Mettur dam level likely to reach brim

Salem, July 17 (UNI) The water level in Mettur dam across river Cauvery is likely to reach its full capacity of 120 ft within five days if the heavy inflow continued, the state PWD officials said.

PWD officials told UNI today that the dam received 54,000 cusecs of water from Karnataka following heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Cauvery basin and the level had touched 104.75 feet.

Karnataka released 74,000 cusecs of water to Mettur dam today, they said.

As the reservoir was nearing its brim, water would be discharged for irrigation purpose five days in advance from the stated date of July 25.

PWD sources said 11,300 cusecs of water was released from Bhavanisagar reservoir to river Cauvery and the authorities had sounded a flood alert in the areas of Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Bhavani taluks.
