Govt sanctions Rs 83 cr for modernising Govt Hospitals

Chennai, July 17 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 83 crore for purchasing modernised and sophisticated equipment like M R I scan and C T scan for the government hospitals in the state, during the current year, to bring them on par with private hospitals, according to state Health Minister K K S S R Ramachandran.

Speaking after launching Rs four crore 64-slice C T scan for the first time in the annals of the government hospitals in Tamil Nadu, at Government General Hospital here today, Mr Ramachandran said so far the government had spent Rs 67 crore for this purpose.

A similar equipment would be provided at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai shortly. It was also proposed to provide M R I scanning equipment at the government hospitals at Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Vellore, Coimbatore and Government Stanley Medical College hospital here, each at a cost of Rs five crore, before September next, he added.

Later, speaking to newspersons, the Minister pointed out that the problem of getting the Medical Council of India's recognition for the Government Medical Colleges at Theni, Kanyakumari and Vellore, was almost solved and these three colleges would function as usual again.

He said the reported Chikungunya fever and a mysterious fever in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu had been fully eradicated. In fact, the chikungunya affected patients from neighbouring Kerala got treated in our hospitals, he added.
