Delhi improved employment scene during 2004-05

New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) Only three per cent of the labour force remained jobless in Delhi during 2004-5, according to figures release by Government today.

Releasing a report on "Employment and Unemployment" situation in Delhi, Finance Minister Dr A K Walia said out of the total population of 155.69 lakhs and available labour force of 52.20 lakh about 50.55 lakh persons (32.47 per cent of the total population) were employed, only 1.64 lakh persons (1.06 per cent of the total population were unemployed in 2004-05.

The report has been prepared by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics on the basis of sample survey conducted during 61st round of National Sample Survey during 2004-2005.

The total employment as per 60th round in 2003-04 was 48.57 lakhs out of available labour force of 51.50 lakh and unemployment was 2.94 lakhs. Therefore 1.98 lakh persons got employment during a year.

Of those 50.55 lakhs employed in Delhi, about 47.75 lakh persons were employed in the urban areas and 2.80 lakh in the rural areas.

Dr Walia informed that about 20.46 lakh persons (40.46 per cent of the total) were in the category of self-employed. About 26.66 lakh (52.74 per cent of the total persons) were in the category of regular salaried class. However, self employed persons as per the survey conducted under 60th Round in 2003-04 were 19.14 lakhs(39.41 per cent of the total). Therefore the percentage share of self employed persons in Delhi has registered an increase.

The survey revealed that out of 1.64 lakh unemployed persons, about 1.39 lakhs were men and remaining 0.25 lakh were women.

Out of 1.64 lakh unemployed persons, about 1.47 lakh (89.27 per cent) were in the age group of 15-29 years and remaining persons were in other age groups.

The rate of unemployment among male in urban are of Delhi is only 2.9 per cent as compared to 3.1 per cent in Mumbai, three percent in Chennai, 5.3 per cent in Kolkata and 3.8 per cent at the national level.

However, in case of female, the rate of unemployment is 4.1 per cent in Delhi as compared to 5.3 per cent in Mumbai, 10.4 per cent in Kolkata, 2.3 per cent in Chennai and 6.9 per cent at the national level.

The survey estimated about 34.49 lakh households in Delhi with an average household size of 4.51 persons during 2004-05. The average household employment size was 1.47. About 16.14 per cent of total households belonged to 'Scheduled Caste' category, 10.39 per cent to OBC category and 73.47 percent belong to other category.
