Consensus for famous cardiologist Dr B K Goyal as V-P sought

Mumbai, July 17 (UNI) Eminent intellectuals, educationists, scientists and medical professionals here are said to be touch with political leaders to build a consensus on the name on internationally-renowned cardiologist Dr B K Goyal for the Vice Presidentship.

The development come into focus when Dr Farokh Udwadia of Breach Candy Hospital issued an appeal, on behalf of his colleagues and other distinguished citizens, urging political parties ensure that the person to be elected to the high post be chosen without any political consideration.

The consideration of Dr Goyal's name assumes significance following the recent statement of CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat that the Left would support a non-political person for the coveted post.

The appeal by Dr Udwadia, while describing Dr Goyal as an excellent choice for the post of Vice President, says the person chosen for the post should be honourable, highly respected and learned citizen and Dr Goyal fits the bill perfectly as an apolitical person to uphold the prestige of the august office.

''Dr Goyal's name has been chosen after due consideration and deliberations with colleagues and fellow citizens, who are of the view that Dr Goyal is an excellent choice as he has an impeccable record of four decades of service to the society with dedication and devotion,'' he said.

Dr Goyal had been a sheriff of Mumbai in 1981 and has also been honoured with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards. Having served as the chairman of Haffkine Institute for several years, he has been actively involved with several national and international institutions.

''We hold him in high esteem. If he is selected unanimously for the post, this gesture will be appreciated by the countrymen,'' Dr Udwadia said.

When contacted, Dr Goyal said he was not in the race for Vice Presidentship. ''However, if there is a consensus over my name, I may consider accepting it,'' he added.

Dr Goyal is famous for pioneering advanced medical and surgical practices including non-invasive cardiology treatment. He is also close to top leaders of the country.
