AP Council pays rich tributes to Chandra Shekhar

Hyderabad, July 17 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council was adjourned for the day today after paying rich tributes to former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, who died recently.

Moving a condolence motion, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy said Mr Chandra Shekhar, who was born in an ordinary agriculture family, rose to become the Prime Minister of this country.

The great leader was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and had tasted defeat only once.

Though Mr Chandra Shekhar was removed from Prime Ministership within four months through a no-confidence motion, he continued as a care-taker Prime Minister for four more months and left an indelible mark during such a short period.

Dr Reddy said Mr Chandra Shekhar was a socialist to the core and worked day and night for the welfare of the poor.

Leader of the Opposition Dadi Veerabhadra Rao (TDP) said Chandra Shekhar, being a member of the ruling party, opposed the imposition of Emergency and was jailed under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).

Palle Raghunatha Reddy (TDP), Rami Reddy, B Mohana Reddy (PDF) Puvvada Nageswara Rao (CPI), Dilip Kumar (TRS), Ch Sitaramulu (CPI M), Paladugu Venkata Rao, Md Jani, P Govardhan Reddy, K Yadava Reddy and Ganga Bhavani (all Congress) also paid rich tributes to Chandra Shekhar.
