AGP resorts to hunger strike for Govt's removal

Guwahati, July 17 (UNI) The main opposition in Asom, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), today resorted to a 30-hour hunger strike demanding the removal of the Congress-led Asom Government in the state.

AGP spokesperson Apurva Kumar Bhattacharyya said the party has been forced to embark on the warpath in the wake of 'all-round failure' of the state government.

"Be it the security front, or the border dispute or the illegal migrant problem, the Tarun Gogoi-led government has failed to initiate any measure to curb them. The government has lost the moral right to stay in power," he said.

Reiterating its allegation that the state government was involved in the killing of FCI executive director PC Ram, the AGP disapproved the CBI inquiry sought by the chief minister into the killing of the government official.

"When the government is involved in the killing, how can an investigating agency of the government unearth the truth," Bhattacharyya said.

The AGP demanded an impartial judicial inquiry into the killing, by a judge of the Supreme Court.

The AGP further alleged that the police was now harassing the family of Gobinda Deka in whose house Ram and two ULFA cadres were shot dead by police.

The opposition party said it would move human rights groups for justice.

The AGP also took a dig at the Congress over its 'silence' regarding the violence in the border areas and pushing the illegal migrants by Arunachal Pradesh to its territory.

"It appears as if there is no government in the state. It is astonishing that the chief minister has remained mute to the happenings despite the fact that it has augured unwell for the future of the state," the AGP spokesperson said.

Around 50 activists of the party, including its president Brindabon Goswami and other senior leaders, participated in the demonstration in front of the party headquarters.
