AP: 1.31 lakh cusecs water released

Vijayawada, July 17: The Irrigation Department discharged about 1.31 lakh cusecs of surplus flood water from Prakasam Barrage into sea after it received 1.42 lakh cusecs inflows today.

An official of the Irrigation Department told UNI that 10,573 cusecs of water was released for irrigation canals.

Fifty crest gates out of 70 gates of the barrage were lifted up to three feet and the remaining to two feet to let the water flow into the sea, the official said adding the water level at the barrage was being maintained at 12 feet.

The officials at Nagarjunasagar discharged 1.14 lakh cusecs of surplus flood water to Prakasam Barrage at 0900 hrs this morning, after inflows from Srisailam. The water released from Nagarjunasagar would reach the barrage by tomorrow morning, which would be discharged into the sea.

The discharge of flood water from Nagarjunasagar was likely to decrease from this evening, the official added.

Meanwhile, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) had evacuated about 1,800 people from Ranadive Nagar, Ramalingeswara Nagar, Police Colony and other places, which were inundated.

They were shifted to rehabilitation shelters at the Pandit Nehru Bus Station and Patamata. Food and drinking water were being arranged for the evacuees, the sources added.
