Young MPs urge PM, Sonia to tackle malnutrition, reduce MMR

New Delhi, July 16 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have been urged to take up action to tackle the widespread malnutrition and reduce the existing high rate of maternal deaths and infant mortality in the country.

A Group of Young MPs met both the Prime Minister and Ms Gandhi today and presented an Action Plan in this regard. The MPs have prepared the Action Plan following the National Family Health Survey III revealing the widespread malnutrition prevailing in the country.

These MPs have visited many backward regions of the country to do on the spot study of the situation prevailing and how the existing schemes were being implemented to tackle the problem.

These visits revealed how the schemes like Integrated Child Development Schemes were not being properly implemented and various lacunae in the other welfare schemes for poor and marginalised women and children of the country.

The MPs, thus, formulated the Action Plan for more effective implementation of the existing schemes so that the problem could be tackled properly, sources said.
