Agartala, July 16 (UNI) The Bar Association of Tripura(BAT) and senior lawyers of the state have decided to launch a movement to press for a separate High Court.

Addressing mediapersons here today BAT officials said the demand had been 'ignored' by the Centre for the past decade despite clear provision under section 214 of the Constitution.

According to them, about 5660 cases were still pending with the High Court owing to non-availability of judges in Gauhati High Court's Tripura bench.

BAT held an emergency meeting yesterday and constituted a steering committee for the movement under the Chairmanship of Advocate General of Tripura Nishit Adhikari and resolved to exert pressure on the Centre.

Committee Convener and senior advocate Arun Chandra Bhowmik said Tripura had a separate High Court in erstwhile royal regime but with the enactment of Northeastern areas re-organisation Act the union law ministry brought Tripura under Gauhati High Court and in 1992, a bench for Tripura was opened.

He accused the Centre of showing a step-motherly attitude towards Tripura saying, ''With only seven pending cases Sikkim got a separate High Court while a separate HC was set up in newly formed states like Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chattishgarh. But even after 25 years of attaining statehood Tripura has been deprived.'' Detailing the movement Advocate Bhowmik said, they would observe a demand day followed by mass convention in Agartala and finally a delegation would go to Delhi and launch an agitation in favour of the demand.
