Thiruvananthapuram, July 16: Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan today informed the State Assembly that ten people were killed in a road accident even after wearing helmets.

In a written reply to Mr M Ummer and others, he said according to a data released in 2006, an average of 114 accidents were occurring in the state, in which ten people were killed and 136 others injured.

The government could not exempt patients from wearing helmets, as it was imposed by the government on the guidelines of the Central Motor Vehicles Act.

However, the government had issued necessary instructions to police to avoid unnecessary harassment in this regard, he said.

Pointing out that use of mobile phones while driving was one of the main reasons for road accidents, he said the government was taking measures to curb this practice.
