Assembly condoles death of Chandra Shekhar, Sahib Singh among others
Panaji, July 16 (UNI) Goa Assembly today condoled the death of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, former Chief Minister of Delhi Sahib Singh Verma, noted cricketer Dilip Sardessai, Bollywood composer Dattaram Wadkar and Goan composer-cum-singer Ulhas Buyao.
Adopting different motions after the customary address in the first session of the 5th Legislative Assembly by Governor S C Jamir, the House, cutting across party lines, paid glorious tributes to Chandra Shekhar, who was described as a ''socialist who proved that political ambition and idealism can cohabit''.
In the death of Sahib singh Verma, the House observed that India lost a leader who worked tirelessly for the down-trodden besides initiating labour reforms as Union labour minister.
Dilip Sardesai was remembered as a ''Goan who played for the Indian Cricket test team and brought name and fame to every Goan''.
The House noted that ''Dattaram Wadkar was a magnanimous son of Goa whose contribution to the film industry is incomparable.'' In the death of Buyao, the House said Goa had lost a well-known multifaceted personality who had given valuable contribution to the Goan culture as a singer, lyricist, music composer, script writer and stage artist.
The House also remembered Buyao for his role in the historic Opinion Poll in 1967.
