State CPI(M) to hold a day-long convention on Aug 5

Gangtok, Jul 15 (UNI) The CPI(M) Sikkim state committee will conduct a convention on August 5 here to discuss the party's 30-year rule in West Bengal and formulate strategies to strengthen the communist party in Sikkim.

The decision was taken during a state committee meeting yesterday at Rangpo chaired by the unit's in-charge Ashok Bhattarcharya, West Bengal cabinet minister.

Party leaders like Rajya Shabha MP Sita Ram Yucheri and West Bengal party chief Biman Basu were expected to attend the convention, state secretariat member Anjan Upadhyaya said today.

Opposition leaders in the state, including former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari, would be invited to speak on various issues, pertaining to Sikkim during the convention, he added.

The CPI(M) would expose the undemocratic ways and suppressive tactics of the ruling SDF party during the convention, Mr Upadhyaya added.

The party also expressed its support to the hunger strike launched by Affected Citizens of Teesta (ACT) were presently maintaining their strike.

The ACT had demanded scarping of mega power projects proposed in Dzongu, North Sikkim.

During the meeting with ACT members, Mr Bhattacharya assured to take up the issue and stressed that the primitive Lepcha tribe had to be protected, said the state CPI(M) secretariat member.
