UNPA demands high-level probe into FCI officer's killing

New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) Expressing concern over the ''deteriorating law and order situation'' in Asom, the United National Progressive Alliance today demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident in which Food Corporation of India officer Dr P C Ram was killed after being caught in a crossfire during an encounter between the security forces and ULFA.

It also called for central intervention to defuse what it called the inter-state border tension in the north -eastern states.

UNPA leaders, including J Jayalalitha, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chandra Babu Naidu and Omprakash Chautala, held a meeting here at which they passed a resolution, condemning the inept " handling of the situation in Asom.

''It is regrettable that the Prime Minister had sent a condolence message to the family of FCI officer even when he was alive in ULFA custody, showing the inefficiency of the Centre ,the state and intelligence agencies'' said the resolution.

The UNPA demands a high-level inquiry into the whole episode, it said.

Ms Jayalalitha, reading from the resolution at a news conference here said that the way the government was handling the situation had made the people suspect its role in the state.

She also said the Alliance had also grave concerns over the growing inter-state border tension in the north-eastern region and felt that immediate central intervention was needed.

UNPA leaders had come here to hold a meeting to decide their strategy regarding the coming presidential and vice-presidential elections.
