Mettur Dam water level inching towards 100-feet mark
Tiruchirapalli, July 14 (UNI) The water level in the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur across River Cauvery, the lifeline of the delta farmers in Tamil Nadu, is all set to touch 100-feet for the first time in the current year due to copious inflow from Karnataka which had been receiving heavy monsoon rainfall.
State Public Works Department sources here said the water level in the dam stood at 96.33 feet this morning as against its capacity of 120 feet.
The inflow into the reservoir was 28,366 cusecs with the discharge kept at 2,000 cusecs.
The Tamil Nadu Government had already announced the release of water from the dam from July 25 to facilitate 'samba' (long-term crops) cultivation in the delta districts.
Since the dam had dead storage level of water, the government was not able to release water on the customary date of June 12 this year.
Due to heavy rainfall in the Cauvery catchment areas in Karnataka, the Stanley Reservoir started receiving copious inflow of water.
