CRPF jawan dies after suicide attempt in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 14 (UNI) A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan today died after his suicide attempt in a camp in south Kashmir district of Shopian, a police spokesman said.

He said constable Inderbeer Singh of 166 battalion shot at and wounded himself with his service weapon in Gagran camp in south Kashmir's Shopian district on July 9.

He was admitted in Shar-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) at Soura where he died early this morning.

Despite introduction of Yoga and Art of living to help the security forces to come out from distress, suicides among troops in the Kashmir valley have continued.

More than three dozen security force personnel committed suicide in the valley during the past two years.

About a dozen other security personnel have been killed by their colleagues in Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past.

A soldier was given death penalty by an Army court for killing a Lt Colonel in a Harwan camp last year.

According to official figures, 62 people committed suicide in 2006 while the figure shot up dramatically this year and stood at 70 for the first six months.
