Monsoon showers prevent major accident on Ganga Ghat

Varanasi, July 13 (UNI) A major accident was averted due to early morning showers on the Dashwashamedh Ghat here today.

A family had arrived here by a jeep from Deoria district of East Uttar Pradesh for cremating the body of a relative at the Manikarnika Ghat, dotting the Ganga river.

After deboarding those carrying the corpse, the driver Vyas Yadav drove the jeep to the neighbouring Dashwashamedh Ghat and parked it just on the edge of stairs leding to the Ghat.

After parking the vehicle, Yadav fell asleep on the driver seat.

Accidently, the jeep started descending gradually to the main Dashwashamedh Ghat, which is frequented in the wee hours by large number of daily bathers, police said.

Before the driver could stop his vehicle from moving further, the vehicle descended to the main ghat after destroying a makeshift shop.

Any casuality or injury was averted as the early morning showers had rendered the Ganga ghat totally deserted.

The driver has been detained by the police and efforts are underway to lift back the jeep.
