Srinagar, July 13: Jammu and Kashmir governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha paying tributes to the Kashmiri martyrs of 1931 said their struggle for the people's cause helped in sowing seeds of democracy, which has now gained deep roots in the state.

In a message, the governor said the sacrifices of the martyrs would continue to inspire the generations as they adopted non violent and peaceful means to express their feelings for self-rule.

''Those were the times when the people were seethed with discontent but could do nothing due to lack of proper leadership which, however, emerged eventually and steered the state to a new era of self governance and dignity,'' he said adding this led to peace, progress and development of the state with people's active participation in decision making.

Recalling the sacrifices of the martyrs General Sinha said by launching a peaceful movement, they were finding ways for giving expression to the people's agonies.

The sacrifices of the innocent people paved the way for the subsequent political movement, which eventually graduated into people's struggle for achieving the goal of self-governance, he said.

The Governor called upon the people to rededicate themselves to the ideals of the great martyrs and fulfill their dreams of a democratic, secular, peaceful and prosperous State.
