Kokje exhorts scientists to come up to farmers' expectations

Shimla, July 13 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Governor V S Kokje today lauded the work of scientists of Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Foresty and said they should continue to contribute to the development of horticulture programmes with their research activities.

Presiding over the 11th annual meeting of the senate of the University at Nauni in Solan district, he said since horticulture was main avocation of the rural population, the scientist community had a responsibility to fulfil expectations of the farming community of the state.

Mr Kokje said the demand for organic food was increasing and there was an urgent need to carry out research on organic farming for eco-friendly food for domestic and export purposes.

Besides, water was a crucial natural resource and techniques must be updated for its conservation and ensuring its judicious use for cultivation, he said.

He said dissemination of scientific knowledge must be in common language and should meet the requirements of farming community.

The Governor suggested that the University should start some short term paid professional training and courses to increase its income. He assured all possible financial help in the endeavour.
