Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lash chandigarh

Chandigarh, July 13 (UNI) Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds today lashed this Union Teritory and the adjoining areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Strong winds, with the speed of 35 km per hour, swept the City Beautiful, uprooting many trees and holding up traffic.

The UT today recorded 0.6 mm of rains. However, the weather remained pleasant only for a short while as the sky cleared by the afternoon and the city dwellers sweated it out for the rest of the day with increase in the humidity level and temperature.

Meanwhile, in Punjab, Amritsar witnessed 18.4 mm rains and the maximum temperature was recorded at 30.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Ludhiana was 22.4 degrees Celsius and Patiala recorded 28.6 degrees Celsius.

In Himachal Pradesh, the minimum temperature at Shimla rose by a few notches to 17.1 degrees Celsius in comparison to yesterday's 16.8, while the maximum remained stationary at 24.2 degrees despite widespread rains.

The maximum temperature at Sundernagar, Bhuntar and Kalpa dropped to 27.9 degrees, 28.8 degrees and 21.9 degrees as compared to yesterday's high of 32.9 degrees, 33.2 degrees and 23.4 degrees.

The Met office said Shimla recorded 15.1 mm rains, Palampur in Kangra district received 30.4 mm rains followed by 18.6 mms at Dharamshala, 12 mm at Una town and three mm rains each at Bhuntar and Kalpa.

The Met office predicted heavy rains or thundershowers at few places in Himachal Pradesh and in the northern area of Haryana and Punjab during the next 48 hours.
