Govt proposes to amend rules regarding irradiation of food products
New Delhi, July 13 (UNI) The government has proposed to amend the rules concerning irradiation of food products specifically meant for controlling/ inhibiting sprouting, delay in ripening, insect disinfestations and shelf life extension.
The Ministry of Health&Family Welfare has issued a draft Prevention of Food Adulteration (Amendment) Rules which has been published in the Gazette of India, (Extraordinary), an official release said here today.
The proposed amendments are in respect of irradiation of food products on class basis which have been categorized into seven classes along with specific purposes of irradiation such as for controlling/inhibiting sprouting, delay in ripening, insect disinfestations, shelf-life extension.
The ministry has invited public comments on these amendments within a period of 60 days. Comments, if any, may be sent to the Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi within the stipulated time period.
