JK: Geelani put under house arrest
Srinagar, July 13: Breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest since last night, official sources said.
They said it was a precautionary measure.
However, a spokesman for the HC Aiyaz Akbar told sources that the move was to prevent Mr Geelani from visiting the martyrs grave yard in the down town where he was scheduled to address Friday congregation at the shrine of Naqashband sahib.
He said a large number of police personnel surrounded the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani at 2130 hours last night.
Later, the HC chairman was informed that he has been put under house arrest.
''You cannot leave the house till further orders,'' a police officer informed the amalgam chairman, Mr Aiyaz said adding this has exposed the claim by the leaders of the mainstream political parties that India was a democratic country.
He said the voice of separatists was being curbed by force in the valley and those protesting against the Human Rights violations by the troops were being fired upon.
This is the third time when Mr Geelani was put under house arrest by the authorities during the past two weeks.
